Canadian Federal Cabinet Missing The Point
Canada is far behind others in regards to ISP competition. The government has the power to enforce diversity in the Canadian broadband industry but just missed a key opportunity.
We let you know last September that a group of businesses have joined together for a "Campaign for Competitive Broadband" focusing on the CRTC decision regarding wholesale Internet services. The decision gave Bell Canada/Telus the opportunity to limit competition and further enable them to become gatekeepers of the Internet.
The group of businesses involved include SaveOurNet.ca members like Teksavvy and Acanac. We called on SaveOurNet.ca supporters to get involved in the letter writing campaign and we are proud to be a part of delivering nearly 100,000 letters to parliament.
We are sad to report that on December 11th, the Federal Cabinet missed their opportunity to stand up for broadband competition by overruling the CRTC decision.
As the Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC), which is part of the SaveOurNet.ca coalition, noted in a recent press release "the government’s internet broadband decisions will ensure Canada’s dismal performance by world standards for years to come.”
