The CRTC has said that it will consider public opinion in determining the outcome of the traffic shaping hearings set to take place later this year. SaveOurNet.ca is calling on Canadians to let the CRTC know how much they love the open Internet.
SaveOurNet.ca believes:
“We must convince the CRTC to stop big telecoms from controlling our access to the Internet. Bell, Rogers and other large ISPs cannot be allowed to continue serving their own interests by "throttling" Internet traffic.”
The group sees this as an important opportunity for the public to weigh in on a landmark hearing that will determine the breadth of Canada’s commitment to freedom of speech and access to information.
“The decisions made by the CRTC will signal Canada's digital destiny. Your submission could make the difference in whether we have a closed gatekeeper Internet or open online access and innovation.”
To generate public awareness and participation, the coalition has put together a few simple steps for sending out meaningful Valentines that could help determine whether or not the Internet will age gracefully.
They suggest the following strategies:
1. Send the CRTC a Valentine of its own, urging them to put the public’s interest before that of the big telecom companies. http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/crtc_submission
2. Watch and share video prepared by SavOurNet.ca: http://saveournet.ca/valentine
3. Set your Facebook status, Twitter status, or email signature to:
"I heart the Internet: http://saveournet.ca"
“Valentines Day is a time to reflect on our connections and to express our gratitude. It is also a time to demonstrate how far we are willing to go to protect and preserve what matters most to us. It is the perfect holiday for declaring our right to freedom of speech and democracy and for paying homage to the technology that has revolutionized how we connect with one another.” Says SaveOurNet.ca co-founder Steve Anderson
SaveOurNet.ca is a coalition of citizens, businesses, and public interest groups fighting to protect our Internet's level playing field. They are calling on lawmakers and industry to protect openness, choice, and access for ALL Canadians.
