CRTC to Telco Industry: Network Neutrality is an Important Issue

Yesterday, Chairman of the CRTC, Konrad von Finckenstein told the telecommunications industry that network neutrality is an important issue:

"Another issue of increasing importance is net neutrality...[the CAIP v. Bell] dispute is just the tip of the iceberg. Under the heading of "net neutrality lies a whole range of questions affecting consumers and service providers. Fundamental issues of technology, economics, competition, access and freedom of speech are all involved."

The net neutrality issues stated by the CRTC included potential blocking, prioritization, and/or modification of content. Konrad von Finckenstein further stated that the CRTC will be studying these and other issues, and may engaged in a major public consultation.

For net neutrality advocates this is a major win. It proves that the government is willing to take this issue seriously. It shows that the CRTC believes that Canadian consumers are truly important stakeholders in this debate.

We need your support to ensure that the CRTC engages in a public consultation about network neutrality. Tell the CRTC to put Net Neutrality on the agenda of the upcoming public hearings on new media and encourage the CRTC the hold public hearings in cities across Canada to ensure Canadians have their voices heard.
