Fibre network UTOPIA

UTOPIA is a fibre-optic network that was formed by 16 Utah cities. Fibre strands are directly connected to the subscriber's home so they're not owned by the service provider. Fibre-optic networks have high-speed internet due to this. Since the fibre cables are hooked up to each house directly, no house has to share bandwidth with another.

The network is maintained by city employees and requires a deposit by each citizen connected -- this deposit is similar to one a citizen would pay for the sewer connection to their home. The network is also an Open Access Network, meaning that it's open to many service providers. There's a list of UTOPIA's service providers here.

In the past two years, subscriptions to UTOPIA have doubled. But they still need to gain another two thousand to prove that this is a long term solution. From the sounds of it, people should be subscribing to this utopian Internet connection as soon as they can.
