The straggling CRTC

The CRTC is still straggling behind the FCC.

FCC chairman, Julius Genachowski, has been an evident supporter of net neutrality. He is currently pushing for set net neutrality rules in the States. The CRTC and the Canadian government are putting the enforcement of net neutrality guidelines into the hands of consumers rather than taking it on themselves. They have been juggling and tip toeing around this issue.

Head of the Consumer Electronics Association, Gary Shapiro, recently interviewed Genachowski. In the interview, Genachowski claimed:

"The gaps between what people think are sensible rules are narrower than some people feared. Our hope is that there's an outcome here that preserves a free and open Internet [that will] promote innovation, protect the free flow of information … and preserve and accelerate the kind of economic activity that we've seen out of this platform for the last several decades."

The CRTC needs to get on the same level as the FCC. Rules need to be put in place to protect an open Internet and its users. It seems like there is a crisis of leadership in the Canadian commission.
